It’s a shame that we as a nation only come together to give thanks one day of the year. Thanksgiving should be a normal, regular part of our lives. I know that at times we tend to focus on everything that is wrong in life, and everything that we don’t have or perhaps used to have. It can be especially easy to fall into discontent with what is going on in our world these days. I just want to remind you that no matter how hard times may get for you, there will always be something to be thankful for.
The practice of thanksgiving and praise will do wonders for a downcast spirit. I know that when I am feeling down and out all I have to do is start thanking God for all that he has done and it lifts my spirit out of the pit. We are instructed to give thanks in every situation “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” I Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV). So no matter how bad your situation looks, instead of having a complaining spirit, give thanksgiving unto the Lord. We can all learn a lesson from the children of Israel in Numbers chapter 14. Because of their murmuring and complaining many of them did not get to see the land of promise that the Lord had in store for them. Instead, they went into the wilderness for 40 years.
There is another person that we can learn from who endured great suffering. If anyone had reason to fuss and complain it was Job. Instead of getting caught up in his unfortunate circumstances, he chose to worship. His response to these things was “…Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return thither: the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away: blessed be the name of the Lord. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly” Job 1:21-22 (KJV).
Psalms 107:1 says, “O give thanks unto the LORD, for [he is] good: for his mercy [endureth] forever” (KJV). God is good and merciful all the time. He is good when I’m on top of the world and He is good when I am in a desert place. He is good when I have plenty and He is good when I have nothing. He is good when I am at peace and He is good when my enemies come against me. He is good in a time of blessing and He is good in times of judgment.
So even in the midst of hard times, be thankful. “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places” Habakkuk 3:17-19 (KJV).
Have a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving.
