I was deeply disturbed at the level of worship and adoration this pope received during his visit to the United States this past week. I looked on in amazement at the reactions of people as he passed through the crowds. You would have thought that Jesus himself was there. It gets even weirder than this. I ran across a story of the US congressman who stole a glass that the pope drank out of so that he, his wife and staffers could drink from it in order to be blessed. Reportedly he is saving the rest to bless his grandchildren with (click here for article). If this isn’t idolatry, then I don’t know what is.
Then there’s the family who drove 13,000 miles from Argentina just to see the pope (click here for article). This is only one story out of probably hundreds if not thousands of other accounts of extreme measures that people took to see him and be in his presence. Yet, God invites us to be in His presence on a daily basis and how many times do we ignore Him because we’re too tired or too busy. I still shake my head at the lengths that people will go to in order to be in the presence of another human being, when God is longing for us to dwell in His presence.
You have to remember that pope Francis is a mere human being just like the rest of us. He, like the each of us will stand before God and give an account of his life and deeds. We are to worship our Creator, and not the creation. Being touched or blessed by the pope (or any other person) is not going to get you any closer to God. Drinking out of his used water glass isn’t going to impart some sort of blessing on you. If you want to be closer to God there is only one way and His name is Jesus. He tells us in John 14:6, “…..I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me,” (KJV). He is our High Priest and the only one that we are to go through to have fellowship and relationship with God the Father.
Contrary to popular belief (even among some evangelicals), the pope is not holy. Let me repeat that again. The pope is not holy. Only God is Holy and being in the presence of the pope or any other man should NEVER be equated to being in the presence of God. I’m utterly amazed at how deceived the masses are and heartbroken that many Christians took part in this idol worship. Let’s take a look at what God has to say about this. Exodus 20:3 says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me,” (KJV). Anything or anyone that you place ahead of Him becomes a god and an idol. Isaiah 42:8 (NET) says,” I am the Lord! That is my name! I will not share my glory with anyone else, or the praise due me with idols.”
All of this just reveals that the world (and the deluded church) is ready for and will accept the Antichrist with open arms when he steps on the scene.
This makes me wonder, if Jesus had physically walked through the streets of America this past week, what type of reception would he have gotten? Would he have been received by adoring crowds? Would the President have rushed to meet and roll out the red carpet for Him? Would the media have preempted all scheduled programming to cover His every move? More than likely it would have been a non-event and even many that claim to know Him wouldn’t recognize Him.
