I “got saved” by repeating the sinner’s prayer on several occasions in my life, but there was never any real change in me. I continued in my sinful ways and bore no real spiritual fruit. I am in no way saying that saying the sinner’s prayer has not resulted in many salvations. What I am saying is the transformation doesn’t come from reciting or repeating words but from a truly repentant heart. The day that I saw my life change was the day that I fully surrendered my life to Jesus and came to Him with a repentant heart. There are many people out there who claim to be Christians based upon some point in their past when they said the sinners prayer, but to look at their lives there’s no difference between them and the world. So are churches and ministries doing more harm than good by having people repeat the sinner’s prayer?
According to a Gallop poll from 2012, 77% of people in the US identify themselves as Christian (http://www.gallup.com/poll/159548/identify-christian.aspx). The results of that poll are mindboggling to me as I look at the moral decline and state that our nation is currently in. If 77% of the people in this nation were living surrendered sold out lives to Jesus, we wouldn’t be in the predicament that we are in now. So I wonder how many of these people are simply identifying themselves as Christians because they repeated a sinner’s prayer at some point in their lives but never truly repented. There is a message of hyper grace being taught with no emphasis on repentance and turning from our sinful ways. Instead of telling people to turn from sin many churches are making excuses for those sins. No wonder so many are lost and don’t even realize it.
The fact is that there are no magical words that we can recite for salvation. Nowhere in the scriptures does it direct us to say a certain set of words or phrases in order to be saved. The bible tells us that repentance is necessary for salvation.
